DescriptionBy letters patent of 1637 [CA/1/19] mayor, recorder & two senior aldermen of Carlisle were appointed Justices of Peace within city. They could only proceed to determination of felonies or other offences touching loss of life or limb, however, in association with Justices for County of Cumberland.. Carlisle was deprived of right to separate court of Quarter Sessions under Municipal Corporations Act of 1835, but regained it in 1873. Records of minutes of Quarter Sessions were continued 1873-1885 in old minute book.
