TitleMarriage Register
DescriptionMarriage Register
Extent1 Volume
Physical descriptionThis register was found on the 8 May 2007 in a metal safe in a mudbank off the river between Low Row and Bank foot by Mr Christopher Peel and his son Featherstone Common Cottage, Featherstone, Brampton CA8 7JU. After speaking to Mr Huggon the Methodist Archivist, the record office was advised to contact Rev Sue Wilkins the local methodist minister. Rev Wilkins explained that the safe had been stolen from Gilsland Chapel on the 23 August 2004. There had been a spate of opportunist thefts in the area at the time, and the thieves broke in through a tiny window and stole the safe containing the registers. The theft was reported to the Police and the GRO at Southport. The conservation team have done an excellent job cleaning and separating the pages of the registers. They have had to remove the front and back covers and insert the pages into melanex covers, all the writing is now visible if somewhat faded, and this process has prevented the information contained in the registers from being lost.
