TitleCoroners' Inquisitions: Liberties of Cockermouth and Egremont
Date1610-1875
Access conditionsOpen access; kept at Whitehaven Archive Centre.
ContextThese records could be of great interest to many researchers, beyond their obvious value to genealogists. Home conditions are illustrated by the number of house fires and by the many infants scalded or overlaid in bed, and light is thrown on mental illness by the details of suicides. The area covered is particularly important in the history of industrial West Cumberland since it included all the early iron-mining district near Cleator and Frizington, and an important sector of the coal mining country around Workington. Descriptions of early industrial machinery are particularly revealing. More detail will be found where depositions of witnesses survive alongside the formal inquisitions.
