TitleNewtown School
DescriptionNewtown School was established by Carlisle City Education Committee and opened on 13 September 1915 with 152 children. The school included an open air departement, transferrred from Denton Holme Junior School (Morley Street) for 'delicate children' whose health was thought likely to be improved by exposure to frsh air. The original intake of the school was confined to infants and children in Standards I and II, but was extended to Standard III in Aug 1923 and Standard IV in Aug 1924, completing the full primary school age range. Newtown School was never an 'all age' school, and its pupils transferred at about 11 years of age to Ashley Street Boys' and Girls' Schools.

During the Second World War, Newtown School received a number of evacuee children, mainly fron Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland and other towns of the North East, with others from Edinburgh, London and the South of England. These children were absorbed into existing classes and were entered in the school admission register, rather than a separate register for evacuees.

From 1968, most of Newtownv School's leavers transferred to Morton Comprehensive School and in January 1969 it lost part of its catchment area to the Belle Vue School. The reorganisation of local government in 1974 by which the education functions of Carlisle Couty Boroughpassed to Cumbria County Council , made no difference to the status, functions and administration of Newtown School, which continued to be an age 4-11 primary school.

The records listed are the earliest survivng admission registers and summary attendance registers and a sample taken at 5 year intervals opf attendance registers extant in 1988, together with statistical returns, and agendas and minutes of managers' meetings, including Head Teacher's reports. The principal records remaining in the custody of the Head Teacher are the school log books (4 volumes 1915 onwards) and more recent admission registers.
