ContextThere was already a County Treasurer when the surviving Quarter Sessions records began in the 17th century. For most of the 18th century a small group of persons held the office in rotation, usually returning to it every 5th year, but by 1797 there appears to have been a permanent Treasurer. (The High Constables of the five wards held the office of Treasurer in rotation. This explains the five year cycle.) The following list of Treasurers has been compiled from their records :
