ContextThe Centre, which was in the old Endowed Grammar School buildings in Cartmel, provided instruction of a practical character to boys and girls in the Cartmel area. Subjects taught include handicraft and gardening for the boys and laundry, cookery and housecraft for the girls. They appear to have atttended one day a week for 2 years. The centre was later known as Lower Allithwaite Cartmel Instruction Centre.
