TitleCensus Returns
DescriptionIf all the returns were made, not all have survived. There are 27 returns for the West Ward which is therefore the most completely covered. There are probably only 4 missing. For the East Ward there are 16 returns and for the Kendal Ward only 2. There are none for the Lonsdale Ward.
ContextThe origin of these returns lies in an order of Quarter Sessions, 30 October 1787 directing that "the High Constables of this County do immediately issue their Precepts to the several Petty Constables in their respective Wards to make Returns to them before the 31st. Day of December next of the names and number of Inhabitants within their different constablewicks distinguishing their Occupation, Sex and of what each Family severally consists, and that the said High Constables do deliver into Court such Returns at the next General Quarter Sessions of the Peace". (Appleby Minute Book, 1780-1804).
