Date1656-2007
ContextThe Corporation was formed by the nationalisation of the United Steel Companies in 1967. Originally the Workington steelworks were part of the Midland group, but from 1970 they were part of the Teeside and Workington Group. British Steel was privatised in 1987 and merged with CORUS in 1999.

Some records relating to British Steel were deposited in the Carlisle Record Office in 1984, and transferred to Whitehaven in 1996. This deposit consisted mainly of title deeds, and was catalogued as TBSC. This has been re-catalogued and re-numbered to be included with the other records of the British Steel Corporation.
