TitleMoss Bay Primary School, Westfield, Workington
ContextIn August 1954 Moss Bay Primary School was established in the Cranbourne Street premises (built in 1884) of the former Westfield Junior and Infants' Schools, when the new Westfield Junior and Infants' Schools at Nilsson Drive were opened. As the new Westfield Schools were not large enough to serve the area originally allocated to them, many pupils of the old Westfield Schools who had been due to transfer to the new schools were redirected to their old school, under its new name. The continued use of the old school premises appears to have been originally intended as a temporary measure until the schools provision and catchment areas of Workington primary schools were adjusted to meet local population needs. Due in part to the insufficiency of places at the new Westfield Schools, this process took longer than had been envisaged, and Moss Bay Primary School continued in use until 23 May 1969 and its pupils transferred to Victoria Junior School on 2 June 1969.
