| WDRY | Le Fleming Family of Rydal Hall | The Fleming family trace their history in the area back to the 12th century. Rydal Hall became the main seat, being first leased in the 16th century and then purchased in the early 17th century. The family estate was tied to a male entail causing a convoluted and disputed descent. On John Fleming's death in 1643 the estate passed to his son William and then on William's death in 1648 to John's nephew William of Skirwith. The estate was then subject sequestration for his recusancy. Sir Daniel Fleming (1633-1701), a noted antiquarian, inherited the estate in 1653. He was made High Sheriff of Cumberland at the Restoration, knighted in 1681 and elected MP for Cockermouth in 1685. His son, William, was made a hereditary baronet in 1705. The 4th baronet, Sir Michael, was christened 'le' bringing the old family name back into use. The title and the estate split after the male entail was cancelled in the 18th century and the estate descended to Sir Michael's daughter, Anne Frederica Elizabeth le Fleming and her descendants. Anne married the 5th baronet, Sir Daniel Fleming of West Cumbria in 1807 after a short lived marriage he moved to Hill Top in Crosthwaite where he lived with his mistress and their children while she remained with her mother Lady Diana at Rydal, until her death in 1861. The title passed to Sir Daniel's brother, Richard, the rector of Grasmere and Bowness in 1821, his heir Michael le Fleming of Dalmain, emigrated to New Zealand where the title currently resides.
Rydal Hall and the rest of the estate passed briefly to Dame Anne's cousin, Andrew Fleming Huddleston, in 1861 before his death in 1862 and then to Major General George Cumberland Hughes. In April of that year he assumed by Royal licence the name and arms of le Fleming. In 1877 he was succeeded by his son Stanley who served as High Sheriff of Westmorland. The estate remained in the family until it was sold to the diocese of Carlisle in the 1960's.
Although centred on Rydal, the estate also covered the manors of Bekermet, Brathmire, Braithwaite, Coniston, Old Hutton, Skirwith and Kirkland, Grasmere. Marriage created links to other families: Dudley family of Yanwath; Kirkby family of Kirkby Lancashire; Howard family Earls of Suffolk and Berkshire; Tufton family Earls of Thanet and Sir William Norris of Speke and records relating to these families and their property can be found in the collection.
Most of the records cover the 16th - 18th centuries and are mostly estate papers relating to the sale, transfer and dispute of land, including sequestration papers. Many public offices were held by the Flemings and consequently civil, military, ecclesiastical and political papers are also to be found. Sir Daniel Fleming Kt. only developed his political and public activity after the Commonwealth. There is a large collection of letters and news items brought together by the HMC which covers mostly the correspondence of Sir Daniel Fleming giving an insight to the impact of national events on the locality.
